I am 26 years old and early in my career in the chemical industry. I live in the North East of England with my family. I graduated from Keele University in 2019 with a 2.1 in BSc (Hons) Chemistry. I currently work as a Research Technician for Johnson Matthey as part of the Process Chemistry and Catalysis Team.
I hold a brown belt in karate, which I have been training in since I was 15. I believe in pineapple on pizza. I enjoy TV shows such as Friends, Grey’s Anatomy, Ted Lasso, Gilmore Girls, Breaking Bad, Better Call Saul and Bridgerton. I’m currently watching The Office for the first time ever (no spoilers!) I am also a massive Marvel fan!

My Work:
I work on projects developing catalysts for various processes for Johnson Matthey. My current project is looking at the best catalyst for uses in renewable fuels including hydrogen transportation and storage.

As a research technician, I work on projects within the Process Chemistry and Catalysis team. I do laboratory work, run a multitude of analytical techniques, and complete reports on my findings.
My current project looks at the best catalyst for us in renewable fuels. I also help out in other projects where extra support is needed.

My Typical Day:
After checking my calendar for the day, I either commence preparations for lab work or dive straight into setting up experiments after donning my lab coat and specs. Once the lab work is done, I begin data analysis from my computer – excel is my friend – and put together reports on my findings which I present in meetings.

My role is a mixture of laboratory work and desk work so I will either head across to the lab to get geared up and set up experiments/prepare samples/run analysis or I will be writing up my findings, putting together risk assessments for future lab work, etc. I present these results in meetings and sometimes put together posters/presentations for big conference-style meetings.
I also participate in regular health and safety meetings where we take turns for different roles and responsibilities. I am also the person in charge (PIC) of a few pieces of equipment and labs so make sure these are maintained and tidy. I also have a fire warden responsibility, so – in the event of a fire – I help facilitate safe evacuation and personnel management.
Home time is usually between 4-5 pm depending on when I get in/how busy that day is.

What did you want to be after you left school?
After I left school, I wanted to pursue a career in either Policing or Forensic Science
Were you ever in trouble at school?
My biggest issue was I was a talker! I was always getting told off for talking in class - I always got my work done, though!
If you weren't doing this job, what would you choose instead?
Possibly look into the Cosmetics side of the chemical industry, or Teaching?
Who is your favourite singer or band?
Sabrina Carpenter and Renee Rapp are currently in heavy rotation on my Spotify!
What's your favourite food?
Can never go wrong with Pizza!
If you had 3 wishes for yourself what would they be? - be honest!
I wish to buy a house in the next year or so - get out of my parents home! I wish to have my own dog once I move out. And lastly, I wish to travel.
