I always really liked sciences and arts equally at school but I decided I wanted to study physics at uni when I was around 15 and realised that physics underpins chemistry and lets me delve into the fundamental workings of the universe. During my degree, I wasn’t sure what I wanted to do afterwards until I did my research placement where I was designing and testing lasers for telecommunications (making the internet faster!). During this placement, I fell in love with quantum technology research and decided I wanted to be a scientist so I applied to do a PhD after my degree with the support of some of my colleagues who encouraged me. I was around 20 when I decided to become a scientist.
