This job feeds my curiosity! I get to find out how the Universe works on a daily basis and make exciting new discoveries! Anyone can be a scientist, and that makes the community of people I see at work so vibrant!

Being a scientist is my dream job! I like so many things about it. For example, I get to work with lots of amazing people with different areas of expertise. We work together to solve challenging problems and develop new and useful technology. I also get to work with some awesome equipment like this (it’s called a ‘focused ion beam’ and shoots charged atoms at the surface of materials):

I love meeting interesting people from all over the world, traveling to cool places to visit telescopes and also trying to uncover the mysteries of the Universe!

I like being able to learn new things all the time. And having the freedom to research and learn what I want. I like being part of a big international collaboration where I get to interact with some of the best scientists in the world.

I like being in an intellectually stimulating environment.
You have first hand access to new theories, new tech, and can develop your own project.

To give an example, about 10 years ago a colleague told me that plants communicate through electric and hydraulic signals. And I had found this idea so fascinating that I wanted to see this for myself… to the point where I now have the equipment at hand and a student working on that project, although I have no background in plant signalling!
