I am Martha. I am a particle physicist at the University of Manchester. I grew up in Manchester, then did my undergraduate at Imperial College London. I did my PhD at the University of Manchester, where I spent two years working at CERN in Geneva, Switzerland.
Outside of science, I like cooking and baking at home. I like to find new recipes to cook and make my favourite cakes. I also like yoga and swimming before or after work. At the weekend I like to go outdoors for a hike or a cycle. I also like to go away and explore new places.

I am a particle physicist. My research is on the Large Hadron Collider at CERN in Geneva Switzerland. Here we have a 27km long tunnel located 100m underground. Tiny particles called protons are accelerated to extremely high speeds and smashed together. From this we want to look at the fundamental building blocks of the universe and what happened at the Big Bang.

My Typical Day:
In the morning I do some exercise like yoga or swimming. I go to the office and mostly sit on my computer during the work day. In the evening I cook and read my book to relax.

I like to do some yoga or swim in the morning to set me up for the day. I then go into my office at the University of Manchester. Most of my scientific work is data analysis, so I’m sat at my computer. Aside from this I also attend meetings with my colleagues, teach and give talks on my work.
I have lunch and coffee with my friends at the university. After work I cycle home and I like to cook something and read my book in the evening to wind down.
