I like that I try to take inspiration from different places (like the arts and humanities) and that I’m quite passionate about what I do!

I guess one part of me that I’ve learned to embrace is my neurodivergence which can be a challenge at times but also gives me a different perspective on problems which can be really useful in a research group 🧠

I’m going to go slightly left-field here and actually say it’s the fact I’m quite lazy!
Weird as that may sound, I know if I am truly excited about something and have the passion to engage with it then in my mind it’s very worthwhile! I didn’t do the very best I could have at school because I was not excited by absolutely everything we did in class, and often that (understandably) annoyed teachers, but these days efficiency and problem solving are perfect when there is not “one right answer”!

There is a quote [apparently attributed to Bill Gates, although I can’t find any evidence of that] saying it’s always best to hire a lazy person because they will find an efficient way of doing something, and I stand by that: if it’s better to spend a day writing a code to analyse data which will save me a couple of weeks in the long run, then I’m all for that (and hopefully so is my boss!)

Great question. This is a very hard one to answer.

It’s good to be introspective, to look inwards and see how you can improve yourself. However, the other side of that coin is that a lot of people have low self-esteem, or focus too much on improving themselves and not enough on helping others, or the world. It’s complicated.

I think it’s really important to like yourself, not to put too much pressure on meeting the expectations you put on yourself or worse, the pressures from your family, friends, teachers, etc. It’s important to find your own way in life – and be okay with changing your mind about who you are or what you want.

I guess then, my favourite part about my character is that I’ve learn to focus more on how I spend my days: making sure I spend them doing what I love, and helping people. I hope this makes sense!

      Hi, thanks for your question!

One thing I do quite like is my memory. It has always come in quite handy for learning, but more importantly I accidentally learned the entirety of the film Shrek. I can (and I have) recite the whole thing start-to-finish. You may not think that’s an important skill but you’d be surprised how often it comes up!

      Interesting question!

I think I like that I am kind and patient – I try to be a good friend and help out people when they are feeling down. It is also why I love to do science with schools and help out my astronomy colleagues when they are stuck on a science problem.

I also like that I am hardworking. I don’t think I was ever the most intelligent person at university, but I definitely worked harder than most people and turns out that can get you a long way! It is the same in my PhD, I am surrounded by people that I think know a lot more about science and coding than I do, but I keep working hard because I know it is what I want to do for my career 🙂

I think I am quite determined and hard working. I don’t think I got a PhD because I am a genius, more because I work hard!

That I am chatty! It definitely helps because in my role I get to speak with scientists around the globe including Nobel prize winners and even astronauts from NASA! 🎤🥼
